“It’s more important that I’m liked because of my work, I don’t care if people think I’m sexy or if they like or don’t like me in person. Like right now when I’m talking to you on a personal level, I’m not worried about what kind of impression I leave on you.”

I thought it was appropriate to start this 2nd posting about Chinese actress, model and singer Vicki (1st posting here) with this quote by her. Her biography and achievements are too much to mention here. So I’ve gathered some links and photos inVicky Zhao Wei facts

  1. While those FHM photos of Zhao Wei are pretty sexy, she looks absolutely nothing like that in, as we say, ‘real’ life.

This summer I enjoyed a few drinks at Shanghai’s Manifesto Bar’s outdoor deck with Zhao Wei at the table across from mine. Having seen her all over TV and media, she never did much for me. But in person, she was absolutely adorable in a totally Chinese girl next door, non-starlet way. She just came off wonderfully easy on the eyes without much fuss.

I found the same experience in a hotel brush with actress Zhou Xun (“Suzhou River”, “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress”)–just damn nice to look at; no movie star airs about her.

Now, if I can only cross paths with Karen Mok (Mo Wan Wei).

  2. Perhaps it’s because she isn’t especially remarkable – she’s a hottie for sure, but IMHO not outstandingly so. On the other hand, I can’t imagine any Asian Sirens reader not liking her either. So nobody’s motivated to say they like her or they don’t! 😉

  3. her name is “Little Swallow” ha ha….
she is pretty but not extremely remarkable…thitima is much hotter in a dark and mysterious way:)

  4. Actually still photos are not her best medium. She co-stars in the movie So Close and that showcases her attractiveness much more.

She has more of a super cute girl next door quality.

  5. The FHM cover was in 2002 and the “new asian sex kitten” thing never really panned out. She actually tried singing and put out some CDs. I’ve seen them in stores. But I read an interview where she said being a pop star was too much work so she went back to acting. She never got her big international break like Zhang Ziyi or even Hsu Chi, but she’s still one of the cutest Chinese actresses around. -jbangkok, otherasians.blogspot.com

  1. Yep she was indeed in So Close. Haven’t seen the movie myself.

Some tidbits from brns.com about the start of her movie career:

Vicky (Born 03/12/76 in the Anhui province in China) has made a recent splash in Hong Kong and was in fact the highest paid entertainer in Hong Kong in 2001. Her popularity began in China where she became a huge star while appearing in several television series after she was chosen from Beijing’s Film Academy at the age of 21. For her role in Princess Returning Pearl she received the Golden Eagle, which is the top TV award in China. She also recorded some musical albums – though in an interview she stated that she didn’t much like them!

In 1999 she made the jump to HK film in the mediocre Déjà Vu, but has since appeared in high profile films – The Duel, Shaolin Soccer (in which she made herself very homely) and Chinese Odyssey 2002. She clearly has a very appealing personality that comes through in her films. Recently she ran into a hailstorm of criticism when she allowed herself to be outfitted in a dress with the Japanese military flag motif in a print ad – and she was condemned by many for being unpatriotic or simply not being very smart.

This faux paus of hers gained further notoriety when it was announced that the Mainland Chinese government planned to refer to it in school text books. Hopefully however, this will be far from what she will be most famous for in years to come…

(probably old stuff but still interesting read)
