Tina Guo

While Tina Guo may look like a model, she’s actually a talented musician that took up some amateur modeling in her spare time. She’s a well known base player, and dabbled in other instruments for everything from classical to heavy metal music. For those wondering, she does have photos sans clothing, but because of where I found the photos (a site I can’t link to and have trouble verifying) I haven’t posted them below. Sorry.Stats:

Tina Guo

After my last post on Stacey Lee, I thought I should also do a post on my personal favourite new LA ‘model’. I say ‘model’ because sadly it seems as though she has already left her modelling ‘career’ behind her (apparently she only modelled part time to support her studies). However, this is for a very good reason, as she is now one of the hottest up and coming classical musicians in the world. I am talking about gorgeous cellist Tina Guo (web site currently under construction).Born in Shanghai, China, Tina started playing piano at 3, then cello at 7. Now living in LA, she has appeared as cello soloist with the San Diego Symphony, the La Jolla Symphony, the San Diego Youth Symphony, the San Diego Civic Youth Symphony, the Palomar Symphony, and the Idylwild Symphony. She also appeared on television for KPBS in a recital series, and has been featured on the cover of We Chinese in America magazine.

She’s received many awards and been successful in many comptetitions, including first prize in the San Diego Symphony Young Artists Competition, the MTAC VOCE California State Solo Competition, the ASTA California State Concerto Competition, the CAPMT California State Solo Competition, the La Jolla Symphony Young Artists Competition, the Music Heritage Incorporated String Competition, the San Diego Youth Symphony Young Artists Competition, the MTAC Concerto Competition, and the Parness Concerto Competition for Young Artists. She was also presented with the “Most Promising Talent” Award at the California Young Artists Competition. In addition, she is also a published composer, and was awarded first place in the MTNA’s California State Composition Competition for her series of cello duets.

For those of you lucky enough to be in LA on October 30th, she will be playing in a quartet with world renowned violinist Midori at Disney Concert Hall. I don’t know about you, but I find the sight of a beautiful girl playing an instrument of the string family (except perhaps the double bass!) very sensuous. Here’s another photo to show what I mean:

I’m sure the parallels between Tina and a certain other Asian musician (Vanessa-Mae) haven’t escaped our readers. Indeed, Tina even has her own rock band, where she plays an electrified cello! If she plays her cards right I really think she can be the new Vanessa-Mae, so hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot more of her in the future!

Most of the above information was taken from this page – there’s a few nice photos there too. The web pages featuring her modelling photos have largely disappeared, but you can download them here. Here’s another page featuring an MP3 sample of Tina performing one of her personal favourite classical pieces (the first movement of Elgar’s Cello Concerto) recorded when she was just 16 years old (she is now 19).

  1. She is outstanding!! What a beautiful face. And I love the extremely clear photography in the first pic!
    Thanks Lee!

  2. Nice to see you posting here regularly Charisse! Tina’s one of those people who has so much going for her that you really have to wonder how it can be possible. πŸ˜‰

  3. Is she wearing blue contacts in the first picture? I guess so, haven’t seen a Chinese woman with blue eyes yet! πŸ˜‰ Looks good though! My ex gf also did colour lenses sometimes, very sexy. And the good thing is: you can take ’em out again πŸ˜‰

  4. Why dont you approve of colour lenses? And please don’t start with ‘the natural beauty’ thing, cuz you don’t have a problem with fake boobs, and they are rather permanent, while lenses are just like nailpolish; gone that easy! πŸ˜‰

  5. I think coloured contacts usually makes a person’s eyes look vacuous, as they place a kind of ‘shield’ in front of them. But in Tina’s case it doesn’t seem to work out that way for some reason. Still, it may only look good in photos – perhaps in person I still might not like them.

  6. Had to look this one up:

    vacΒ·uΒ·ous
    1. Devoid of matter; empty.
    2a. Lacking intelligence; stupid.
2b. Devoid of substance or meaning; inane: a vacuous comment.
2c. Devoid of expression; vacant: β€œThe narrow, swinelike eyes were open, no more vacuous in death than they had been in life” (Nicholas Proffitt).
    3. Lacking serious purpose or occupation; idle.

    vacuous
1: complacently or inanely foolish [syn: asinine, fatuous, inane, mindless] 2: devoid of significance or point; “empty promises”; “a hollow victory”; “vacuous comments” [syn: empty, hollow]

[From Latin vacuus, empty. See vacuum.]

Personally I don’t have this problem with them. But I can see your point.

  7. There’s a difference in the quality of coloured contacts as well. Some let the depth and structure of the iris shine through, while others do not. In my opinion, this makes a great difference in appearance.

  8. She is definitely cute but not very smart imho. A few months ago I posted about Tina and mentioned her nick name that she is using for her modeling work. I removed the postings because I didn’t want to hurt her career as soloist. Now, a few months later, all the sites with her modeling are still up and running. Weird…

  9. Marco, if Tina signed a model release, she may not have much control over the photos on those sites. Of course, she can try and buy the rights back. I have heard of some celebrities buying back the rights of photos they took before they became celebrities.

Anyway, I think it is sort of a big todo over nothing since the photos I have seen have all been classy and shouldn’t hurt her soloist career. In fact, they could actually make her even more popular as a “sex symbol” in the classical music world. For example, leverage her modeling experience to get on the cover or be featured in popular magazines like Maxim.

  10. For us guys who love Asian ladies…it’s hard to fathom that the other girl is winning. Oh well….that’s our bias I guess! πŸ™‚

  11. Looks like there’s a few rounds (hence the fact that she ‘lost’ the last one) – maybe if she wins the next round or two she’ll win the tournament. Keep voting for Tina! πŸ˜‰

  12. Marco, I noticed her Tina Guo modelling page has disappeared. As for badboy’s comments, she does still have some control over her photos, but her current mangement wasn’t happy she did them. Hence the disappearance of the modelling page under her own name.

  13. Lee, I don’t think it works that way. If she doesn’t win today’s round, then from my understanding she is out. You either win a round and go on or “game over”.

I don’t know why it said she lost but maybe the website logic is a bit messed up because later it allowed me to vote for her.

  14. I’ve just updated my article to include a link to an MP3 of Tina’s performance. I will also be uploading some of her modelling photos soon – as you will see, on top of everything else she has quite a nice body too. Amazing!
