10 questions for photographer Andrew Semansco

Not long ago I posted about photographer Andrew ‘Sonny’ Semansco. Now I interviewed him about his work.

Asian-Sirens: What kind of photography do you like?
Andrew: I love photographs. If I am not taking them I am looking at them or imagining them. My wife is already used to me stopping Netflix DVD movies every few minutes to examine a scene. I like all kinds of photography. I am sick about it.

Asian-Sirens: When did you decide to become a photographer?
Andrew: I can’t remember. I am not sure I ever made the decision. It was made for me through my desire to hold, capture images, moments in time and share them with others. I have been taking photographs with that in mind for 20 years.Asian-Sirens: Which photographers do you admire and why?
Andrew: I know this may seem tired to you but I really admire Nobuyoshi Araki. I love that he has somehow gotten away with creating honest erotic imagery and be paid handsomely for it. I lived and worked in Japan for two years and I simply cannot imagine how he did it. I also like Richard Kern, new and old. If I wasn’t such a wimp I would beg him to carry his camera bag.

Asian-Sirens: What makes a good photo?
Andrew: It takes my breath away immediately.

Asian-Sirens: What makes a good model?
Andrew: Innate sexuality, the ability to communicate and show up on time (!) A model that can remember and forget everything they know whenever I ask. An art background is sometimes helpful. An individual that understands we are on the same team.

Asian-Sirens: Is there an Asian model you really would like to work with?
Andrew: Straight up? I don’t play the game that way. If you want to shoot in my style then come to me. Otherwise, I find most of my models on the street. I think the girl next door has more to offer than most professional models. I am sure of it in fact. There are some Japanese models that I could name that yes, I would die to shoot. There was a girl that I met on the street here in Hawaii named Masa Sato that went on to some success in the gravure world. OK, I’d like to shoot her and yes, Yoko Kumada if she would pose nude.

Asian-Sirens: Did you ever screw up an assignment?
Andrew: Never, I always get the shot. I spend too much time dreaming and scheming to screw things up. I have shot bitchy blonde playboy models and got what I needed. Of course, doing a great job will sometimes not please an editor but I never look at it as “screwing up”. You live, you learn.

Asian-Sirens: Did you ever get intimate with a model you worked with?
Andrew: Are you paying me for this interview? Do models sometimes sleep with photographers, yes they do.

Asian-Sirens: What kind of camera and lighting equipment do you use?
Andrew: I have bounced around a lot over the years. I use the camera or lighting system that strikes me as being correct at the moment. I like my Hasselblad 500 CM but don’t use it often. I have two Nikon f5s that I like and that are reliable. I use an outdated Nikon D100 that works well for me. Natural light normally works fine for my type of work. I have a bunch of lights that I will pull out if I have someone to help me. Cameras are actually quite simple.

Asian-Sirens: What are your future ambitions as a photographer?
Andrew: I want the world to look through my eyes. It looks great!

Asian-Sirens: Thank You Andrew, and all the best to you. I am sure we will be seeing more of you here on Asian Sirens!

In the meantime, check out his work at Flickr.com.

“Struggling to make a living as a photographer and willing to travel ANYWHERE to shoot.” That’s what Hawaii based Andrew Semansco (Sonny) tells the world in his Flickr profile.

I found him while looking for photo’s of Iris Estrada. Well, I found them and took a quick peek at some of his other photo’s and they all looked very good. Natural and glamourous at the same time. Check out his sets of Iris, Alyssa and Sai for example. A Google search led me to his .com site and his profile at OneModelPlace. More work there.

10 Questions for photographer Barry Smith

10 Questions for photographer Barry Smith

I am proud to present to you the second photographer in our series: “10 Questions for…”: Barry Smith from Studio8Photography. We featured him a short while ago.

Read about Barry’s thoughts on Glamour Photography, his successes and screw-ups 😉 And to top it off, Barry is offering two free wallpapers of CJ Gibson and Carolyn Savage. (Wallpapers available for members only, but guess what? Asian Sirens membership is free!)

Asian-Sirens: What kind of photography do you like?
Barry Smith: Glamour Photography tops my list! I love to find and capture the beauty in all women. I’ve shot everything from sports to landscape but truly enjoy Glamour.

Asian-Sirens: When did you decide to become a photographer?
Barry Smith: When I was a child! (just a few years back!). I was always fascinated by the camera. In fact, instead of riding my bike, I would turn it upside down and crank the pedals and pretend it was a camera…drove my friends crazy! So…I am comfortable behind ANY camera, motion picture or still!Asian-Sirens: Which photographers do you admire and why?
Barry Smith: Very tough question…probably all the greats who had the fortune of creating some of the most amazing black and white images of the biggest movie stars of the ‘40’s and ‘50’s. I study Hollywood Glam with admiration and respect, and try to draw from those images to create stunning glamour shots.

Asian-Sirens: What makes a good photo?
Barry Smith: The chemistry between model and photographer. Contrast between foreground and back. A 3-dimensional look. Lighting of course…and above all, imagination and creativity.

Asian-Sirens: What makes a good model?
Barry Smith: Instinctiveness in front of the camera. Knowing EXACTLY which poses complement her looks. The ability to know exactly where the keylight is. The ability to understand the photographer’s style and act instead of react.

Asian-Sirens: Is there an Asian model you really would like to work with?
Barry Smith: They know who they are (LOL!).

Asian-Sirens: Did you ever screw up an assignment?
Barry Smith: I am not sure ANYONE would say no to that question! My answer is YES. The first time I shot with the incredibly beautiful Playboy model Kay Sivilay. I was very nervous and admittedly pretty much intimidated by her beauty. I had my laptop along, shot and downloaded the first series of images…all good! BUT, I downloaded the next set, forgot to format the card, and erased the entire first set of over 300 images! I really regret I will never see those again!!! AARGH!!

Asian-Sirens: Did you ever get intimate with a model you worked with?
Barry Smith: NEVER! A professional photographer must be just that, even if the temptation is there! I have heard stories. Just because someone has a digital camera doesn’t mean he is a photographer. I think models need to be very careful, and make sure they ask other models for references before agreeing to work with ANY photographer!

Asian-Sirens: What kind of camera and lighting equipment do you use?
Barry Smith: I use two different camera bodies. My fav is my Canon 1D with a variety of great lenses, mostly “L Series”. I use White Lighting strobes. I also shoot motion picture cameras, from Arri’s to Panavision!

Asian-Sirens: What are your future ambitions as a photographer?
Barry Smith: To learn more every day. I have been so fortunate to have worked with some amazing models who bring such beauty and professionalism to every image! I would love to do some more magazine and advertising work. The fact that I work in the television industry is definitely a plus. I am accustomed to working with people who make their livings in front of the camera.

Asian-Sirens: Thank You Barry Smith, and all the best! Keep up the good work!

Chris Thompson starts hotthais.com

Jewel (Photography: Chris Thomson)

I talked the other day with photographer Chris Thomson from Brighton, United Kingdom. Chris told me he is working on a new site called hotthais.com (not available yet) and shot a lot of great Asian models such as Thitima (aka Katie Aston), Tia Maria Cordero and Jewel. He send me a few sample shots from which I selected a few from Jewel (to start with). While Chris is working on the new site you can find most of his excellent work (also some Asian models) at Sexy Xposures Magazine.
