Shabondama Elegy
South African-born Ian Kerkhof, who lives in Amsterdam, has made wild arty movies like
"The Boy Who Masturbated Himself" to a "Climax and Confessions of a Yeoville Rapist". He is
controversial, but his movies are beautiful and intensely involving. He represented several new
movies at the recent film festivals over the world. Definitely most interesting is "Shabondama Elegy"
(1999) a film that was made in Japan in collaboration with "pink movie" (Japanese porn) producer
Suzuki Akihiro. The movie got several awards such as the Golden Calf Special Jury Prize 1999 at the Grand Prix
of the Dutch Cinema.
The movie revolves around a Dutch gangster (Tom Hoffman) who works for the Yakuza and
betrays them. While on the run he meets a Japanese girl (Mai Hoshino) and an intense,
obsessive, sexual and even masochistic relationship follows.

Mai Hoshino
Why is the movie so interesting you might ask. Well, first of all because it is a movie made
by an Amsterdam cineast and one of the main characters is Tom Hoffman one of the most popular actors
in The Netherlands. Even more interesting is, however, the appearance of Mai Hoshino. Mai is
a 20 yo Japanese AV star who made her debut with "Aries" in March 1999. Since then she did 6
adult videos and "Shabondama Elegy". Still need to ask Ian why they selecetd Mai but believe
me she is great!
I found one rare photo taken at AdultDex 1998 in the US (like Sakura she want to become big in
the US) and a few non-nude from her Private Seasoning series. Whenever you come across a website
with Mai Hoshino please let me know!
